I’m definitely not the first to see this connection, but I’ve been reflecting on the link between a scarcity mindset, over-consumption, and hustle culture. As I read and thought more deeply about it, it hit me that these patterns are intertwined. There’s this underlying feeling of having to overdo it because there might not be enough tomorrow—whether it’s food, money, opportunities, or even time.

For example, I noticed that when I felt the urge to have just one more snack or drink, it wasn’t always about enjoyment. Sometimes, it came from a deeper fear of scarcity, like, “What if there’s not enough later?” But when I paused and told myself, “There will be more. There is always enough,” it shifted my mindset. This was a small but profound realization that came up as I worked to heal my scarcity mindset around money. The same principles apply—scarcity creates a loop of fear, and fear feeds over-consumption. Breaking that cycle requires rewiring the way we think.

Hustle Culture and the Struggle to Thrive

The connection between scarcity and hustle culture is another piece of the puzzle. Hustle culture teaches us that we have to work constantly to “deserve” success or stability. I have people close to me—hardworking, determined, far from lazy—who are juggling three or four jobs just to make ends meet. Yet, they’re still struggling financially. It’s surely not a lack of effort; these are systemic issues at play. Hard work alone doesn’t guarantee abundance, and that’s where the narrative of hustle culture falls apart.

This grind mentality creates burnout and leaves little room for joy or creativity. It makes you feel like rest is a luxury rather than a necessity. And let’s not forget the psychological toll it takes when you’re giving your all but still feel like you’re barely keeping your head above water. How do we shift from surviving to thriving?

Practical Steps to Break the Hustle and Scarcity Mindset

Here are 5 ways that have helped me—and may help you—break free from the hustle, scarcity, and lack-driven mindset:

1. Practice Gratitude Daily
Gratitude shifts your focus from lack to abundance. Every morning or evening, write down three things you’re grateful for. This simple practice can rewire your mind to notice what’s already going well, making it easier to trust that there’s enough.

2. Challenge Your Beliefs About Rest and Success
Ask yourself: Where did I learn that rest is unproductive? Start reframing rest as necessary for creativity and success. Take intentional breaks without guilt and notice how it improves your energy and focus.

3. Embrace a “There Is Enough” Mindset
When you catch yourself worrying about not having enough—whether it’s time, money, or opportunities—pause. Remind yourself, There is always enough. I am enough. Repeat it as often as needed. Over time, you’ll notice your fears starting to loosen their grip.

4. Set Small, Aligned Goals
Instead of overwhelming yourself with constant big-picture hustling, break it down. Ask yourself, What’s one aligned step I can take today? Consistent, small steps add up without depleting you.

5. Redefine What Success Means for You
Take time to write down what success truly looks and feels like for you—not what society says. Is it more time with loved ones? Freedom to rest? Joy in the work you do? Define it on your terms and allow that clarity to guide your choices.

Whether it’s shifting your relationship with money, breaking free from hustle culture, or finding balance in your daily life, the journey is about finding what works for you. And as you do, remember: there will always be enough. You will always be enough.

No matter how jacked up our story began, we’re the ones holding the pen now. We get to write the middle and the end. We have so much more power than we realize. It’s up to us to claim it.
